Aligarh: Experts and faculty members reflected on various aspects of wildlife conservation to protect endangered and threatened species and subspecies and their habitats during the three-day national webinar on “Wildlife Management”. Wildlife in India: Current Perspective and Challenges” from the Department of Wildlife Science. , Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) which ended on October 6th.
“As the country celebrates Azadi ka Amrit Mahotosav, the government is taking concrete steps to manage, protect and improve wildlife populations. Strategies have been developed to manage each species separately to pave the way for comprehensive ecosystem improvements to meet the needs of threatened and endangered species,” said Professor Jamal A Khan (Chair of the Department of Science at wildlife).
He pointed out that India has established a large number of conservation reserves and has also enacted an effective legal framework for the protection of wildlife to find solutions to human-wildlife conflicts.
Dr K Sankar (Former Director, Salim Ali Center of Ornithology and Natural History, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu) spoke on “Reintroduction of Endangered Species as a Management Tool: A Case Study Sariska Tiger Reintroduction Program”; Dr Rohit Chaudhary (Department of Wildlife Science, College of Forestry, Navsari Agricultural University) delivered a lecture on “Camera Trap Technology: A Tool and Boon for Wildlife Management”; Dr Sharad Kumar (Wildlife Science Department, AMU) described “local communities and their role in wildlife management”; Dr Sandeep Kumar (IFS, former DCF, Wildlife, Gir National Park) discussed “Lion population management in the Grand Gir”; Dr Satish Kumar (Wildlife Science Department, AMU) spoke on the “role of radio-telemetry in wildlife management”; Dr M Shah Hussain (Chief Scientist, Aravalli and Neela Hauz Biodiversity Parks) spoke on the “Role of Biodiversity Parks in Wildlife Conservation and Management”; Dr Zehra spoke on “Human-wildlife conflict with particular reference to large carnivores in the Gir landscape” and Dr Kaleem Ahmed (Wildlife Science Department, AMU) shared his perspective on the “management of endangered species “.
