Redcliffe Labs partners with PGICH Noida – India Education | Latest Education News | World Education News

Noida: A Memorandum of Understanding has been signed between Redcliffe Labs, a unit of Redcliffe Lifetech in the USA, and PGICH, Noida, under which a free genetic counseling service will be launched in the medical genetics department of PGICH, Noida . Under the agreement, a dedicated Redcliffe Labs genetic counselor will counsel families with genetic disorders and provide protective genetic counseling to new couples.

This facility in Noida will be an added convenience for families of children with genetic disorders, as most centers (Delhi and NCR) do not have a dedicated genetic counselor to care for such patients.

Knowledge of the patient’s history and heritage is one of the most crucial elements of a diagnosis of genetic disease. For the same reason, a counselor is crucial in understanding inheritance, which extends to the health of grandparents, on both the maternal and paternal side. To reach a conclusion, one must understand and attempt to link the clinical condition or phenotype to an ancestor or family. Such a level of information and knowledge enables the counselor to advise the parents of the child concerned about possible future pregnancies.

These genetic counseling services will be provided by Redcliffe Labs’ highly trained genetics team. The genetic counselor will offer support and information to families with or at risk of genetic disorders. The counselor will collect and analyze family history and inheritance patterns, determine likelihood of recurrence, and provide details of genetic testing and associated procedures; and help identify families who may be at risk for a genetic disease. In particular, the genetic counselor will help families understand the importance of genetic diseases in light of their cultural, individual and family contexts. Additionally, the genetic counselor will offer supportive counseling services, act as a patient advocate, and refer individuals and families to other health care providers and neighborhood or community-run support groups. the government.

Commenting on the partnership, Dheeraj Jain, Founder of Redcliffe Labs, said, “We are pleased to contribute to the noble work being done by the Department of Medical Genetics at PGICH, Noida for the care of children and families with rare genetic diseases. . It is estimated that rare diseases affect approximately 6-8% of the population in a given country. Even a conservative estimate of the country’s population of 1.35 billion gives a tally of nearly 81 million people. In addition, 70% of rare hereditary diseases appear in childhood. Furthermore, North India in particular is known to be very rich in genetic disorders and is also characterized by consanguineous marriages, which increases the risk of rare diseases.

Ishaan Khanna, Director of Reproductive Medicine and Genetics at Redcliffe Labs, said: “The majority of genetic diseases cannot be cured, but they can be prevented. The main purpose of genetic counseling is to educate people about genetic diseases that run in their family. The family must have precise information on the probability of having a child with a genetic disease as well as a prenatal diagnosis via a pregnancy test. Therefore, genetic counseling is the need of the hour because it not only saves money in the long run, but it also saves lives. ”

This agreement was entered into initially for one year which may be extended in the future with the mutual consent of both parties. This genetic counseling facility will run twice a week starting July 25, 2022.

The MoU was signed by Prof. Ajay Singh, Director, on behalf of PGICH, Noida and Mr. Ishaan KhannaDirector – Reproductive Medicine and Genetics at Redcliffe Labs, on behalf of Radcliffe Lifetech, Noida.

It is worth mentioning that Redcliffe has recently added the most advanced and high-end sequencing system “NovaSeq 6000” to its portfolio of diagnostic technologies, making it the first in North India and among the few online in the country to line up the most advanced and high-end set of instruments.
