Odisha Central University celebrates National Press Day 2021 – India Education | Latest Education News | Global education news


Koraput: Odisha Central University, Koraput, celebrated “National Press Day” on November 16, 2021 on its campus on the occasion of the establishment of the Press Council of India. On this occasion, the University’s Dep’t of Journalism & Mass Communication organized a mixed-mode webinar to mark the occasion. Shri K Satish Nambudiripad, Addl. Managing Director, Bureau of Outreach & Communication (BOC), Ministry of I&B, Govt. of India and Prof. Akshay Rout, ex-CEO, DD News & Swachh Bharat Mission and currently Visiting Professor, Department of Journalism and Mass Communication spoke on the occasion as keynote speaker and guest of honor respectively . The webinar was opened by Prof. SK Palita, Vice-Chancellor I / c, CUO. In his inaugural address, Prof. Palita expressed his concerns about the functioning of the press and spoke about the history of the day, the digitization as it has occurred, the press revolution since the first days of the struggle for freedom and the awakening of the masses.
Prof. Rout raised questions about the relevance of India’s Press Council, self-regulation and discussed the semantic link about the word “Press”. The way we adapt to the dynamism of print to audiovisual to social-digital and connecting it with technology and society.
Shri Nambudiripad, underlined the importance of the theme of this day 2021, “Who is not afraid of the media”, its meanings and its overlapping issues. He lamented that the historic holiness attached to the media had actually done them great harm. In this context, he proposed the concept of self-scientification of the media. He described the changes that the communication firmament has undergone. He cited academics like Marshall Macluhan and George Bernerd Shaw to explain the conflict between the role of journalists and that of advertisers. He concluded on an optimistic note that for students, it is an exciting time to be in the media industry as it goes digital.
Dr Sourav Gupta, Assistant Professor, Department of J&MC coordinated the webinar and presented an introductory note. He briefly recounted the story of National Press Day. Dr PK Rath, Assistant Professor and HoD I / c, DJMC, welcomed the guests and panelists and spoke about the significance of the day, the challenges facing the Press Council of India after the emergence of new media and the functioning of the media during this pandemic.
The session was observed and beautifully summarized by Dr Sony Parhi, Faculty of the Department of J&MC. Ms. Talat Jahan Begum, Faculty, Department of J&MC extended the vote of thanks. Students and faculty members attended the webinar in general.
