She told IANS in an interview: “At first I thought they were joking. But later, when the creators told me in detail, I realized it was reality and they were investigating it. ” Mithali added that after learning that a biopic was being made about her, she took it as a great opportunity. “I also find it a great opportunity to follow the journey of women’s cricket in our country. And it is also important that people know and understand when and what difficulties female athletes have to go through in our country with the support system and in the way society views the female athlete.”
Mithali shared how she reacted when she learned that Taapsee would be portraying her onscreen. “When I found out she (Taapsee) was doing the part, I also did my homework. I saw a few of her movies. She was playing a hockey player, so I knew she didn’t didn’t necessarily have to work a lot on fitness or getting the athlete body but maybe the cricket part is something she probably should work a lot more on but after watching the trailers I gotta admit she really worked hard.
Furthermore, Mithali talked about the changing scenario of women’s cricket and how it is gaining prominence and gaining its independent identity. Mithali said: “I think after the 2017 ODI World Cup a lot of things changed. We started to slowly come out of the shadows. Previously the T20 Women’s World Cup was also held in tandem with the Cup. men’s world t20 standalone tournament slowly leagues are happening all over the world and i’m sure at some point maybe next year we will have our own league. Indian Team for West Indies T20I: Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah, Yuzvendra Chahal Miss Out; Ravi Ashwin returns for a five-game series.
She also talked about how the audience has changed and how people are now more interested in watching women’s cricket. “So now women’s cricket is ready to stand on its own. And in terms of the viewership and the way people show up to watch our matches has also changed earlier, in fact, as many knew we were playing a international series, so the grounds of the stadiums would be empty. Now, you know, when it’s well marketed and the matches are televised, there are a lot of people who come to the stadium to watch us and a lot of young children come to watch our matches. I think it has certainly changed a lot and I’m sure it will change a lot more in the future.” Directed by Srijit Mukherji and produced by Viacom18 Studios, ‘Shabaash Mithu’ stars Taapsee Pannu as Mithali Raj. The film is set to be released on July 15.
